Games on Demand nog niet voor de PlayStation 3

Microsoft zal later dit jaar een Games on Demand programma gaan starten. Via deze service kun je volwaardige Xbox 360 games gaan downloaden, net zoals je nu al Xbox Live Arcade games kunt kopen in de Marketplace. De vraag is nu natuurlijk of de grote concurrent Sony hetzelfde van plan is met de PlayStation 3.

In een interview met Eric Lempel van Sony is duidelijk geworden dat dit (nog) niet het geval is. Door de grote opslagcapaciteit van de Blu-ray discs lijkt het Sony op dit moment niet handig om deze service ook te leveren aan gamers.

Not right now; it's not something we have planned, just because the size of the games is massive. With Blu-ray we can put up to 50 gigs on a dual-layer disc, while Xbox 360 is still on a 9-gig media. So technically it's possible, but I think the issue would be, 'Do you want to download 40 gigs and keep that on your hard drive? That's not to say it will never happen, though. I think there's great opportunity there in the future, and it's something we'll always look at, but for the time being it's not a direction we're going in.
